Summary:
With retro being so hot, and with how many failed attempts at crafting a great next-gen Sonic the Hedgehog game, it was only a matter of time before Sega went the route Capcom took with the Mega Man franchise. Introducing Sonic the Hedgehog 4. This game, available on the Xbox Live Marketplace, will be divided into episodes, with this episode, Episode I, touting a 1,200 MSP price tag. Everything you love about the classic Genesis Sonic games is here, but improved, including taking the stages from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and just renaming them, and altering them! Yes, this game is Sonic 2, but with a sleeker design. The controls are simple as before, though slightly altered when it comes to moving, such as slower response times, an unnatural stopping in mid air if you left go of the button, and a jump attack which makes this game much easier. If you've played either of the first 3, then you have a good idea what to expect already.

Progression Achievements

All Stages Cleared!
Defeat the final boss and view the ending.

Sonic 4: Episode 1 is composed of four stages that are broken down into 3 acts and 1 boss battle each. There are also seven bonus stages available, but these don’t seem to count to the achievement. After you complete these twelve stages, another fifth stage will become available, which is broken down into 5 boss battles. Beat these five stages and watch the credits to unlock this achievement.

The Story Begins
Clear SPLASH HILL ZONE, ACT 1.

Simply complete Splash Hill Zone, Act 1 and the achievement will unlock.

Crush Dr. Eggman
Defeat a boss for the first time.

Simply beat Eggman on the boss battle for Splash Hill Zone, and the achievement will unlock.

Misc. Achievements

Golden Flash
Clear all Acts as Super Sonic.

While the achievement may seem impossible at first to the seasoned Sonic fan, it isn’t. Sonic 4: Episode 1 features a level select screen. Grab all seven of the Chaos Emeralds, then replay and complete every stage of every act as Super Sonic to unlock this achievement. You transform into Super Sonic (after collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds) by collecting 50 rings, then pressing :X: or :Y:.

Immortal
Build up 99 or more extra lives.

You must have 99 lives at once. These are easier to obtain in the Casino zone, Act 2. You can run past cards, and when you do, if you get three sonic faces, you get an extra life. Play this round a couple times and make sure you hit any groups of cards on your path, and this achievement should come quickly. This video offers a visual description of this:

Ring Collector
Collect all the Rings in ‘Special Stage 1′ and Clear the stage.

To unlock a Special Stage, you need to gather 50 rings in a stage, then jump through the giant ring at the end of the stage. The Special Stages are the old school maps that turn in a circle, but instead of it beind rotating that changes by certain circles on the wall, you control it with the right analog stick. You need to obtain rings in the stage to unlock barriers. You also have to do all of this in a Special Stage before the set time limit is up, which plays a huge role in later Stages. It’s suggested to just get the Chaos Emerald and complete Special Stage 1, as it will unlock in Stage Select. If you fail, you need to go through a whole stage again and go through getting the 50 rings once more.

When you play Special Stage 1, you need to obtain all the rings in the stage, then finish the stage by getting the Chaos Emerald. This will unlock the achievement. Here is a Youtube video that shows the entire Special Stage, as well as where all the rings are, as rushing due to the time limit may cause you to miss some.

Speed’s My Game
Clear SPLASH HILL ZONE ACT 1 in less than a minute.

You need to clear Splash Hill Zone Act 1 in less than a minute. If you miss out, just keep playing and trying to race through as fast as you can, and try not to get hit.

Super Sonic Genesis
Acquire all seven Chaos Emeralds.

There is a total of seven Special Stages. You can only access one Special Stage in an Act. When you do, a Chaos Emerald will appear next to the Act’s name in the Stage Select screen. Simply navigate the rotating room to get to the Chaos Emerald at the end, and make sure you don’t run out of time. When you complete all seven stages, you’ll have all the Chaos Emeralds, and the achievement will unlock. If you have difficulty with any of the Special Stages, walkthrough guides are available on Youtube.

The First Chaos Emerald
Acquire a Chaos Emerald.

To obtain Chaos Emeralds, you need to enter the Special Stages. You need to acquire 50 rings, then complete the stage. When you complete the stage, you also need to jump through the giant ring to enter the Special Stage. These stages are an enclosed map with a timer that moves with the right analog stick against a psychedelic background. You need to navigate one of these Special Stages and acquire the first of seven Chaos Emeralds to unlock this achievement.

Untouchable
Clear the E.G.G. STATION ZONE without taking any damage.

The E.G.G. Station Zone will unlock when you complete all the Acts in all 4 stages, including boss battles. This fifth stage will unlock, and lead to five additional boss battles with Eggman. You need to complete these boss battles without taking any damage at all. The following is a Youtube video that shows the proper method to defeat these various forms of Eggman and unlock the achievement:

Enemy Hunter
Defeat 1,000 enemies.

Simply defeat 1,000 enemies total in the game. Clearly, this will not unlock in your first time through, so just keep playing the game until you rack up enough kills.

On-Line Achievements

Contender
Upload your recorded scores and clear times for all stages.

In order to unlock this achievement, you need to complete all stages in both Score Attack and Time Attack mode. When you do,  go into the Leaderboards for the game, then press to corresponding buttons to upload the scores and times for each Act. When the last score is uploaded, the achievement will unlock.
