Tequatl the Sunless
Complete 10 Tequatl achievements.
Completing all 10 of the following achievements will unlock this last reward. The reward is the title “The Sunbringer”, and a core Tyria Mastery Point. These achievements do not need to be completed within a single run. So if you happen to miss out on something, don’t panic just wait until the next spawn time and try again.
Tequatl spawns every 4 hours from server reset (midnight UTC).
Slaughter in the Swamp
Defeat Tequatl the Sunless.
Defeating Tequatl isn’t overly difficult, most of the fight is down player organization. A successful map will have all six turrets in use, defense teams protecting the turrets, and a zerg group attacking Tequatl directly.
After the first burn phase the map will need to defend three batteries and the mega laser. Failure to protect the batteries and laser will result in a phase failure.
You will repeat this three times through the fight.
Defend the eastern, northern, and western Vigil batteries, and kill Tequatl during a single encounter.
During this fight you will need to defend three batteries and the mega laser. With each phase you can go to a different battery and defend it to gain full credit. Once you have credit for that event, go to a different battery on the next defense phase.
Watch Your Step!
Don’t get caught in the bloated creeper explosions.
The bloated creepers are the large slow enemies you will see hovering behind Tequatl, and around the batteries on the defense segments. You need to make it to the end of the fight without a creeper applying poison to you.
I highly recommend using ranged weapons, and keep your distance if you see these enemies. You can totally avoid them if you go to the laser, or other batteries also.
I Found It!
Find the sunken treasure within the Watery Grave.
This happens when Tequatl slams his arms into the ground, causing fingers to spawn. You will see AoE’s all over the area which indicate a whirlpool has spawned. Once sucked under, swim down towards a chest at the bottom of the area. You can turn on object names to make this easier to see. Interacting with the chest will unlock this achievement.
There is now an alternative way to earn this by entering a portal that spawns during the fight. It’s found on the side of the underwater cliff behind Tequtl. Use the portal and head down towards the treasure below.
Fire the megalaser at full strength.
This is fairly simple. During the defense events your map needs to make sure that none of the batteries or laser are destroyed. If you complete the event, the laser will fire at full strength and unlock this achievement.
Above the Waves
Successfully jump over the shock wave 10 times.
Every so often Tequatl will slam his claw into the ground which will create a small tidal wave. This wave will knock you over if you don’t dodge or jump over it. For the achievement you need to jump over 10 waves.
Dodge Tequatl’s tail sweep.
This can be a little tricky, but there’s an alternative method for earning this. While standing behind Tequatl, you will need to watch his tail. As it swings you need to dodge at the right time to avoid it.
Alternatively standing behind Tequatl at the start of the fight, should fear you into the water earning the achievement.
Have a Seat and Pull the Trigger
Use a hylek turret at the Tequatl battle site.
Around the fray you will see six turrets. At any point, even if the boss isn’t active, you can sit in a turret and fire it. Doing so will unlock this achievement. If you have a hard time accessing the turrets during the fight, head here early, or at off-peak hours for the boss.
Fight Tequatl without allowing any of the hylek turrets to be destroyed.
Out of all the achievements for this boss, “Flawless Defense” is the hardest. Your map will need to have defense teams setup in the right places. Failing to have a defense team for the four points on the map may result in a turret being destroyed.
This can be very easy, or it can be very difficult. It all depends on how organized your map is. If the map loses a turret, this achievement will be void until the next fight.
Quick on Your Feet
Defeat Tequatl without getting hit by a vortex attack.
The most obvious way to avoid this is to stay on dry land away from Tequatl. So using turrets, or joining a defense team. You can alternatively fight Tequatl up close, but your dodges need to be perfect.
With the most recent updates to the game, the vortex (whirlpool) attack is far less common. Most maps, if you show up early will have enough players to push Tequatl through phases faster than he can start this attack.
